#009 – Letting Children Out

Transcript:

Yesterday, in Spain, where I live, children under 14 were allowed outside their homes for the first time in six weeks. So today I am featuring the work of Kevin Peterson, who paints about isolation, rigid boundaries, fear, and what it’s like to grow up in a broken world.  You’re listening to Cosmic Dynamics, 5 minutes of exploration on art, change & the music of the universe. A lot of damage was made to childhood over the last few weeks. Rigid boundaries, very questionable restrictions, in the name of fear, in the name of control, in the name of shaky science, finally resulting in growing pressure against the Spanish government to let children breathe, ride a bicycle, see a bird, run.  Kevin’s paintings are particularly relevant for this moment of history, and for all of us around the world. Nature and wild animals regaining their rights on the abandoned built environment. Children, their allies, walking by their side. Like in a beautiful dream. It’s about trauma, fear, loneliness and the strength that it takes to survive and thrive. Kevin plays with the contrast of the untainted, young and innocent against a backdrop of a worn, ragged, and defiled world. He explores the hopeful breakdown of restrictions, as well as questions about the forces that orchestrate our behavior. Take a look, links are in the episode notes. Contemplate, put this music in the background, you will feel something powerful. It might even inspire your next move.
