#005 – The Process of Acceleration

Transcript:

As the world is slowing down right now, it might be a good time to explore acceleration. Let me tell you a story: my Granddad was obsessed with acceleration, so obsessed he had become one of the leading researchers in particles acceleration, from the 60s and on, at the CERN in Geneva. I don’t really brag about it because to me, these endless hours spent researching how to accelerate particles meant no time whatsoever with his family … Disconnexion. Isn’t it what Acceleration creates for all of us in the end? My name is Camille & you’re listening to Cosmic Dynamics - 5 minutes of exploration on art, change & the music of the universe. Faster economics, fast food, fast track, fast sex, speed dating, quick fixes, immediate gratification. Modern society became intrinsically connected to acceleration it seems, harnessing energy in the name of faster. And the rest of the world trying to catch up to pay the bills. It’s a matter of staying alive even. When everything accelerates, it feels good, until everything suddenly stops and we are confronted to the void - this very void I talked about in the previous episode. My grand dad’s obsession for acceleration was a way to escape. Probably giving him a sense of achievement when he was actually moving further and further from his family, and from the essence of life. I am finding out this is what is happening to all of us in some way when get trapped into acceleration.  Today we can accelerate particles to 99,99% of the speed of light, and we are more disconnected than ever, interesting isn’t it?  The art piece I am featuring today is called “the Process of Acceleration”. It’s a large mural made by a Canadian artist that I really like called Aaaron Li-Hill. The mural was made in Grenoble France. I quote “A pursuit in understanding the world around us is crucial to create change, but how is this knowledge used and what change is created is the constant friction of civilization.” I invite you to take a look, it’s worth it, all links are in the notes…  I spent a couple of hours with Li-Hill last week and we had a deep conversation that I want to share with you. Tomorrow, the weekly live mix is dedicated to him, and we are going to explore his universe, his thoughts and views on art, change, and the subconscious. It’s at 7pm CET on www.cosmic.show (that’s 1pm NY / 10am in LA). See you tomorrow.  Thank you for tuning in.
